Ghastly Appetizers: Mummy Jalapeño Poppers

These Mummy Jalapeño Poppers are a guaranteed hit! They’re perfect bite-sized appetizers that look just spooky enough while still being incredibly tasty. The jalapeños bring the heat, balanced by the creamy cheese filling, and the crescent roll “bandages” add a fun, festive touch.

Ingredients:

  • 10 jalapeño peppers

  • 280g cream cheese, softened

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 roll of puff pastry dough or (if its available where you live) crescent dough.

  • Sliced black olives (for eyes)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the jalapeños: Slice each jalapeño in half lengthwise and remove the seeds and membranes (wear gloves to avoid irritation). If you prefer less heat, remove all the seeds and inner ribs, as that’s where most of the spice is concentrated.

  2. Make the filling: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until well combined.

  3. Fill the jalapeños: Spoon the cheese mixture into the hollowed-out jalapeño halves, spreading it evenly.

  4. Wrap the mummies: Roll out the dough and cut it into thin strips. Carefully wrap each filled jalapeño with the dough, leaving small gaps so that it resembles mummy bandages. Leave a small space for the eyes.

  5. Bake: Preheat your oven to 180°C (375°F). Place the wrapped jalapeños on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and crispy.

  6. Add the eyes: Once baked, press two small pieces of black olive into the open space to form the mummy’s eyes.

  7. Serve: Serve warm, and watch these spooky treats disappear!

Tip: If you want a milder version, you can substitute mini bell peppers for the jalapeños.

If you want a simpler appetiser, why not make Eyeball Devilled Eggs. These are classic devilled eggs with a twist - add an olive slice and food coloring to create a bloodshot eyeball effect.

Sinister Stews: Pumpkin Cauldron Chili

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere where Halloween takes place in winter, here's a festive Pumpkin Cauldron Chili recipe that’s as hearty as it is fun! The pumpkin “cauldron” is both a cooking vessel and a serving dish, bringing a little magic to the table.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium to large pumpkin

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 large onion, diced

  • 1 red bell pepper, diced

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced

  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 450g beef mince (can be substitute with plant-based ingredients)

  • 1 can diced tomatoes

  • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree

  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth

  • 2 tbsp chili powder

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for a little heat)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped cilantro, green onions, sliced jalapeños

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pumpkin Cauldron: Preheat your oven to 180°C (375°F). Cut the top off the pumpkin, creating a “lid.” Scoop out the seeds and fibres (reserve seeds for roasting if you like). Brush the inside of the pumpkin with a bit of olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Place the pumpkin (with the top on) on a baking sheet and roast for about 30-40 minutes, until tender but not mushy. Set aside.

  2. Cook the Chili: In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat 2 tbsp of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion, red and green bell peppers, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute. Add the mince (or plant-based substitute) to the pot, breaking it up with a spoon until fully browned. Drain any excess fat if necessary. Stir in the diced tomatoes, black beans, kidney beans, pumpkin puree, and broth. Season with chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne (if using), salt, and pepper. Stir well. Bring to a simmer, cover, and let cook for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. Transfer Chili to the Pumpkin: Once the chili is ready, carefully ladle it into the roasted pumpkin. Place the pumpkin back in the oven (at 180°C) for another 10-15 minutes to allow flavours to meld.

  4. Serve: Serve chili straight from the pumpkin “cauldron” and garnish with your favourite toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped cilantro, or green onions. Use a spoon to scoop out some pumpkin with each serving for a delicious, edible bowl!

You could also try the Witch’s Brew Broccoli Soup. Make any rich, creamy broccoli soup (or other green soup) you fancy and swirl a dollop of sour cream on top to resemble a cauldron’s bubbling brew.

Bone-Chilling Main Course: Zombie Meatloaf Hands

For a truly creepy and gory centrepiece, this Zombie Meatloaf Hand is sure to impress your guests. Shaped like a decaying hand with a “bloody” ketchup/tomato sauce glaze, it’s as delicious as it is gruesome!

Ingredients:

  • 900g beef mince (or a mixture of beef and pork)

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 large eggs **(if you don’t eat eggs, see the bottom of the recipe for an alternative)

  • ½ cup milk

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • ½ cup tomato sauce / puree / passata or ketchup (for glaze)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Sliced onions (for fingernails)

  • Extra tomato sauce for “bloody” effect

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the meatloaf mixture: In a large bowl, combine the mince, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, eggs**, milk, salt, pepper, and oregano. Mix thoroughly until everything is evenly incorporated.

  2. Shape the meatloaf: On a lined baking sheet, shape the meat mixture into a large hand. To make it more realistic, form individual fingers and press down slightly on the ends to create knuckles. Make sure the fingers aren’t too thin, as they will shrink while cooking.

  3. Add fingernails and details: Slice the onion into small pieces and place them on the tips of the fingers as “fingernails.” Use a knife to create indentations for knuckles and wrist bones.

  4. Make the glaze: Mix together the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl. Brush the entire hand-shaped meatloaf generously with the glaze.

  5. Bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (375°F). Bake the meatloaf hand for 50-60 minutes. About 10 minutes before it's done, you can brush it with more ketchup to give it a fresh, bloody look.

  6. Final touches: Once the meatloaf is cooked through, drizzle extra ketchup around the wrist and fingers to give it a gory, bloody appearance.

  7. Serve: Place the meatloaf hand on a serving platter and carve into it like a true zombie dinner!

Don’t eat eggs? No problem! Combine 2 tablespoons of cornstarch / Maizena with 3 tablespoons of water per egg to substitute egg in this meatloaf.

Tip: For an added visual effect, surround the hand with mashed potatoes and drizzle the “blood” tomato sauce over the top.

You could also try Spaghetti Brain. Cook your spaghetti and marinara sauce as usual. Combine them, making sure you use enough sauce to bind the spaghetti together but not so much that the dish has liquid in it. Mould the mixture to resemble a brain. If, like me, you have a party shop nearby, you may even find a brain mould or bowl to make this task easier.

Desserts to Die For: Graveyard Chocolate Pudding Cups

Desserts are where you can have the most fun with Halloween themes. These Graveyard Chocolate Pudding Cups are not only adorable but really easy to make. Kids love decorating their own graveyards, making it a great interactive treat.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chocolate pudding (homemade or store-bought)

  • 1 package Oreo biscuits (crushed to resemble dirt)

  • 1 package shortbread or Tennis biscuits (for tombstones)

  • Gummy worms, candy pumpkins, and Halloween-themed sprinkles for decoration

  • Icing or edible marker in your choice of colour (to write on the tombstones)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the “dirt”: Place the Oreos in a resealable plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin until they resemble dirt.

  2. Assemble the pudding cups: Divide the chocolate pudding into individual serving cups or small bowls.

  3. Add the dirt: Sprinkle a generous layer of crushed Oreos over the top of each pudding cup to create the graveyard dirt.

  4. Make the tombstones: Take the shortbread or Tennis biscuits and use icing or an edible marker to write “RIP” or other spooky sayings on them. Stick each cookie into the pudding to resemble a tombstone.

  5. Decorate: Add gummy worms crawling out of the dirt, candy pumpkins, and any Halloween-themed sprinkles to complete the look.

  6. Serve: Chill the cups in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. Guests can dig into their own personalized edible graveyard!

Tip: For a gory twist, add red jelly or strawberry sauce inside the pudding to look like blood oozing from the grave when eaten.

An alternative is to offer your guests Bloody Red Velvet Cake. Decorate Red velvet cupcakes or cakes with “blood” red icing and chocolate “knives” stuck in for effect. You can get a knife mould and cooking chocolate at your local baking shop to craft these decorations.

Wickedly Good Drinks: Vampire’s Blood Punch

Every Halloween party needs a spooky drink, and this Vampire’s Blood Punch is perfect. It’s delicious, visually striking, and can easily be adapted to be kid-friendly or spiked for the adults.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups cranberry juice

  • 2 cups pomegranate juice

  • 1 litre lemon-lime soda or ginger ale

  • 1 cup orange juice

  • 2 cups vodka (optional for adults)

  • Red food colouring (optional for added effect)

  • Gummy vampire teeth or plastic spiders for garnish

  • Ice cubes (consider using a latex glove to create a hand-shaped ice mould)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the punch: In a large punch bowl, mix the cranberry juice, pomegranate juice, and orange juice. Stir well.

  2. Add the fizz: Just before serving, add the lemon-lime soda or ginger ale for a fizzy effect. If you’re making the adult version, stir in the vodka at this point.

  3. Create the ice hand: Fill a latex glove with water, tie it off, and freeze it overnight. Once frozen, peel away the glove and float the ice hand in the punch for an eerie, spooky touch.

  4. Add special effects: If desired, add a few drops of red food colouring for a deeper blood-red colour.

  5. Garnish: Throw in gummy vampire teeth or plastic spiders for decoration and serve the punch in clear cups to show off the vibrant colour.

Tip: If you want a non-alcoholic version, just skip the vodka and add extra fruit juice or sparkling water for some extra fizz.

Lime milkshakes are my favourite, and Halloween is the perfect time for Witches’ Brew Milkshakes. Make your green milkshake – either lime or cream soda – and serve it in clear cups with creepy garnishes like gummy worms or vampire teeth.
