Your ultimate guide to gearing up, grabbing deals, and lasting through Black Friday like a pro.

Get ready to shop up a storm on Black Friday.

It’s that time of year again: Black Friday is looming, and for deal-hungry shoppers, this is no ordinary day. This is the World Cup of savings. Just as athletes train for months before a marathon, we too need to prepare for the biggest shopping event of the year. Whether you’re braving brick-and-mortar stores or the virtual checkout line, this tongue-in-cheek guide will help you warm up, fuel up, and keep the energy flowing as you power through the biggest shopping marathon of the year.

Warming Up: Prepping body and mind for the Big Day

Limber Up Those Limbs

If you’re planning to hit the stores in person, you’ll need more than a big coffee to fuel your shop-a-thon. Black Friday warriors should start with a good stretch. Picture this: You’re weaving through aisles, lifting heavy boxes, sprinting to the next department. This isn’t just shopping - it’s a cardio and strength workout rolled into one.

  • Leg Warm-Ups:Start by stretching your calves, quads, and hamstrings. Simple lunges and squats will work wonders. This isn’t just about strength; it’s about agility. Flexibility is your friend when you’re sidestepping other shoppers or making a quick pivot toward the last TV on the shelf.

  • Arm Prep: The arms? Oh, they’re going to be crucial. You’ll be lifting items, steering your cart, and possibly (unintentionally, of course) nudging a few elbows. A series of bicep curls, shoulder stretches, and wrist rotations will keep your arms in prime condition for fast, smooth motions - no jerky movements when you spot that perfect kitchen gadget.

Exercising the fingers.
Exercise your fingers to strengthen them in the days leading up to Black Friday. You'll be glad you did when your fingers keep clicking all day long.

 Finger Fitness for Online Shoppers

For those of us in the online battleground, don’t underestimate the power of limber fingers. Online Black Friday shopping is a dexterous sprint, where speed and accuracy make all the difference. Prepare your hands as if they’re about to play a high-stakes piano concerto.

  • Warm-Up Drill: Begin with some light finger stretches. Pull each finger back gently, rotate your wrists, and even try some finger tapping exercises on a hard surface to build up your stamina. Set your keyboard and mouse in an optimal position, and keep a smooth, non-slip mouse pad handy. This is not the time for a sticky mouse slowing you down.

Nutritional Training: Fuelling Up for Peak Performance*

Just as an athlete prepares with carbs and hydration, we need to think about what we’re consuming to keep our energy levels high. Starting a week ahead, incorporate a few power foods to make sure you’re battle-ready. Here’s your game plan:

  • Complex Carbs: Whole grains, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal can build up those energy reserves. By loading up with slow-burning carbs, you’ll keep hunger at bay and avoid a sugar crash mid-shop.

  • Protein Power: Lean proteins like eggs, beans, and fish will keep you feeling full and give you long-lasting energy without the bloat. A high-protein breakfast on Black Friday morning will set you up for a day of power-shopping.

  • Hydration: Drinking water in the days leading up to Black Friday is key to stamina. You want to be in peak hydration mode so you don’t need to keep stopping for bathroom breaks when that limited-time sale is on.

The Race: Game-Day Strategies for Serious Shoppers

You’ve stretched, you’ve fuelled, and you’re ready to roll. Now the real fun begins: it’s time to dive into the fray, whether that’s a crowded store or the vast ocean of the internet. Here’s how to keep your stamina up and avoid the dreaded mid-shop slump.

Three smoothies.
Breakfast is important to your shopping success. If you don't want to stop and eat, grab a smoothie on the go.

The (Shopping) Athlete’s Breakfast

For breakfast you want something that’s going to give you the energy to keep you running all morning. Might I suggest a Power-Packed Oat Bowl which includes slow-burning carbs, protein, and healthy fats for sustained energy throughout a busy morning?

Start with a base of Jungle oats (rolled oats) or quick cook if you’re short on time, with chia seeds and a pinch of cinnamon. Add your protein in the form of either Greek yogurt or a scoop of protein powder for extra stamina. Top with blueberries, a handful of almonds or walnuts, and a drizzle of honey for natural sweetness.

If you’d rather save time for shopping, and take your breakfast with you, why not opt for a smoothie that’s packed with energy-boosting ingredients, perfect for keeping you fuelled and alert. Make your smoothly, pour into a travel mug and you’re set.

Green Power Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup spinach (or kale)

  • 1 banana (for natural sweetness and carbs)

  • ½ avocado (for healthy fats and creaminess)

  • 1 cup almond milk (or any milk of choice)

  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds (for fiber and omega-3s)

  • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder (optional, for an extra nutrient boost)

Instructions: Blend everything until smooth, adding ice if you prefer it cold.

This smoothie is loaded with greens, fiber, and healthy fats for sustained energy.

Berry Beet Energizer

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup frozen mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries)

  • ½ cup cooked and cooled beetroot (for natural nitrates that support blood flow and stamina). If you live in South Africa, grabbed your ready-cooked beetroot from the fridges in the veggie section at Pick n Pay.

  • 1 tablespoon peanut or almond butter (for protein and healthy fats)

  • 1 cup coconut water (for hydration and natural electrolytes)

Instructions: Blend until smooth, adjusting the consistency with more coconut water if needed.

The beetroot (beets) in this smoothie enhance endurance, while berries provide antioxidants to combat fatigue.

Tropical Energy Boost Smoothie

Of these three smoothies, this one is definitely my favourite. I love the pineapple and ginger together.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pineapple chunks (for natural sugars and vitamin C)

  • ½ mango (for a quick carb source and extra sweetness)

  • 1 tablespoon chia or flax seeds (for fibre and sustained energy)

  • 1 cup coconut milk or coconut water (for hydration)

  • 1 small piece of fresh ginger (for an energizing kick and digestive benefits)

Instructions: Blend everything until smooth, adding more liquid if needed.

This tropical blend is refreshing and full of natural sugars, plus it’s packed with vitamins and minerals to keep energy levels high.

Outlast the In-Store Frenzy

Navigating a store on Black Friday is an art form. Between the elbows, the mad dashes, and the split-second decisions, there’s hardly time to blink. Staying energized and tactical is key.

  • Elbow Etiquette: Finessing Your Way to Victory: When it comes to Black Friday, your elbows are more than just an anatomical feature - they're a precision tool. Mastering subtle, crowd-friendly moves is key to snagging your loot without landing in hot water. Here are a few "pro tips" for graceful jostling, delivered with a wink.

  • The Subtle Nudge: Mastering the art of the “subtle nudge” is crucial. For that last sweater in your size? A gentle lean, an “oops, didn’t see you there,” is perfectly acceptable in Black Friday etiquette. Practice this delicate manoeuvre ahead of time - it’s all in the shoulder, no flinging!

  • The Casual Shift: Imagine you’re at a buffet, gracefully manoeuvring your way toward the last spring roll. The key is to pretend you’re just repositioning yourself for a better view while simultaneously occupying the space. Keep your movements slow and deliberate - no sudden jabs - and always accompany your shift with a quick smile or an “oh, excuse me!”

  • The “Oh-No-You-Go”: A psychological tactic for the ages. When someone reaches for the same item, extend an arm as if to let them take it. Then, as they hesitate in polite confusion, sweep in and grab it with the opposite hand. A whispered “oops!” or a sheepish grin ensures plausible deniability. (Warning: this only works on overly polite shoppers - choose your targets wisely!)

  • The Shopping Cart Shield: Your cart isn’t just for your items; it’s also your greatest defence. Use it to subtly block others from cutting in front of you. A slight diagonal angle is all it takes to claim dominance over the aisle while maintaining your “oops, just browsing” innocence. Advanced users may perfect the cart “pivot-and-turn” for a full aisle block.

  • The Drop-and-Dash: When the stakes are high and time is short, adopt the classic decoy move. Fumble an item in front of you (a scarf, a random kitchen towel - it doesn’t matter). The moment others glance down in shared concern, make your move toward the prize. Timing is critical here; don’t overdo the drop, or you risk creating a pile-up.

  • The “Over-the-Shoulder Hover”: This one’s for lines at registers or particularly juicy display tables. Position yourself just close enough to suggest you’re next in line - or that you’re already mid-decision - but not so close that you seem pushy. An air of confident entitlement does wonders here. If someone tries to edge in, a quick “Oh, I was just about to grab that!” seals your dominance.

  • The Strategic Apology: The ultimate move in elbow diplomacy: lead with a pre-emptive apology. “Oh, sorry! Didn’t mean to bump you!” works like a charm as you slide into position. People are far more likely to let you cut in if they think you’re already being considerate. Sprinkle in a bit of laughter, and you’re golden.

  • The Art of Deft Dodging: You don’t want to be the person stuck in the middle of a swarm. Position yourself near the edges of aisles for quick exits. And if you’re going for something high-ticket, beeline straight to it - head up, eyes on the prize.

  • Rest Stations and Fuel Stops: Some stores may have coffee stands or even free samples, so use these as refuel points. Pack some healthy snacks (trail mix, granola bars, maybe a banana), and pop them in whenever you have a quick moment to keep those energy levels high.

Runner stretching.
Remember to warm up before hitting the aisles.

Remember, Black Friday is a game of skill, not brute force. The real pros know how to outmanoeuvre with charm and subtlety, leaving their fellow shoppers wondering how they came away empty-handed while you left victorious. Your elbows are tools of persuasion, not aggression, so wield them wisely, with grace and the tiniest hint of mischief.

Online Power Moves: Avoiding Cramped Clicking

Black Friday online shopping is not for the faint of heart. The clicking marathon requires serious finger endurance. Here’s how to keep those fingers nimble and your mind sharp as you snag deal after deal.

  • Pace Yourself: The temptation is to go full steam ahead, but remember, there are a lot of deals to scroll through. Try using a timer to remind yourself to take a break every 15 minutes. A quick wrist stretch or finger massage will stave off cramps.

  • Hydration Reminder: Just because you’re sitting down doesn’t mean you’re not working hard! Keep a big glass of water next to your keyboard and a flask of tea or coffee nearby to sip on as you browse.

  • Quick Snack Fixes: Keep handy snacks by your computer. Nuts, apple slices with almond butter, or dark chocolate can give you a quick energy boost without slowing you down. Avoid anything sticky that might get on your keyboard - a rookie mistake!

Boost Your Stamina with Smart Snacks and Sips

You’re in the thick of it now, and energy is paramount. For a full day of shopping, here’s your ultimate snack guide to keep you at peak performance.

  • High-Energy Bites: Opt for snacks that combine protein and carbs. Think protein bars, peanut butter crackers, or even small packs of biltong. These little bites can give you a lift and fit in your bag easily.

  • Energy Boost Trail Mix: Combine almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and dark chocolate chunks for a delicious snack. The combination of nuts, seeds, and a bit of dark chocolate delivers a blend of healthy fats, protein, and natural sugar to keep you going. Keep a small bag in your pocket or bag so you can nibble on it whenever you need a quick energy boost.

  • Mid-Race Hydration: If you’re running around in-store, consider an electrolyte drink. You’re burning more calories than you think! Water is always a must, but a sports drink can give you that extra edge.

  • Natural Sugars: A few dried fruits or a little honey in your tea can give you a quick sugar hit without the crash. Avoid the sweets aisle. While it’s tempting, you’ll only wind up with a sugar slump right when the best deals hit.

Refuelling at Lunchtime

If you’re still shopping come lunchtime, its time to take a break and power up with the Protein-Packed Wrap or bowl which you can prepare before hand and pack in your bag or keep next to your keyboard to eat mid-shop. Build your wrap, on a sheet of tin foil or grab an indestructible Tupperware bowl that won’t break, in the following order.

  • Base: Whole grain wrap or a bed of leafy greens.

  • Protein: Grilled chicken, hard-boiled eggs, or chickpeas for a veggie option.

  • Veggies: Cucumber, bell peppers, shredded carrots, and cherry tomatoes. If you’re staying home or want to keep other shoppers at bay, throw in some raw onions as well.

  • Healthy Fats: Avocado slices, feta or a tahini dressing. If you’re feeling particularly daring, why not opt for all three?

  • Flavour Boost: Sprinkle with a dash of paprika, a balsamic glaze or a squeeze of lemon for added zest.

A lunch like this is light but full of protein and nutrients to keep you energized and focused for the rest of the day.

The Finish Line: Keeping Calm and Carrying On

The final stretch is in sight! Whether you’re on foot or online, it’s easy to lose steam in the last hour. Here’s how to keep your energy up, remain vigilant, and carry all your hard-won goods back home.

  • Cooling Down: Just like in a real workout, a cool-down is key. Once you’re loaded up, give your legs, arms, and fingers a well-deserved stretch. Roll your shoulders, wiggle your fingers, and take a few deep breaths to shake off the adrenaline.

  • The Victory Snack: Nothing says “victory” like a well-deserved treat. Reward yourself with something small but delicious. A mini chocolate bar, a fresh pastry from the food court, or a slice of homemade cake waiting at home. It’s your reward for making it through the Black Friday Olympics.

  • Share the Glory: Finally, share the day’s spoils on social media - whether it’s an Instagram story of your full cart or a tweet (an X? Just doesn’t sound the same) about snagging that half-price coffee machine. A little post-shop bragging is a well-earned victory lap, and you never know who’ll be impressed by your Black Friday pro skills.

That’s a wrap

That's a wrap for this year's specials.

And there you have it: your foolproof guide to conquering Black Friday with humour, stamina, and a touch of finesse. Whether you’re limbering up those legs or fine-tuning your fingers, remember that shopping, like any sport, is all about the right preparation. With a bit of strategy, a lot of hydration, and some high-energy snacks, you’re ready to tackle the biggest day of shopping like a true pro.

So, lace up those sneakers (or flex those fingertips), and may the shopping odds be ever in your favour.
